HOW TO STAY FOCUSED DURING STUDY?
Have you lost your focus on studies? If yes then do not worry because almost every student has to face this situation in his life. Thus, when thinking about motivation, it is good to ask two questions “What moves you to study?” and “What moves you to persist in studying?”
An easy tip for University/Mdcat fellows Perhaps the answer to the first question might be the dedication or value we attach to obtaining a degree, or it may be the feeling of achievement when we get a degree in our hands. While it is also important to understand what motivates us to study?
LACK OF MOTIVATION
Lack of motivation is not a new thing as almost every person has to face this situation once in life. Motivation could be of different types but we will just focus on its importance for students. Distractions from studying are something that we’re going to keep encountering every day until we learn to control it. It happens to all of us – some more than others. The usual advice is “just do it anyway”, but it’s easier said than done. Most commonly, distraction is linked with a lack of motivation, which is most important, if you are going to do anything.
Lack of motivation could lead to depression. There could be other causes such as tetchiness, restlessness, fatigue, lack of appetite, lack of sleep, and amplified need for more sleep.
Stay motivated! We know it’s tough to study when you’ve seemingly lost all motivation. But when exams are right around the corner you need to just do it. Here are some practical steps you can take to help you stop getting distracted and stay focused when you’re studying.
1) SET A GOAL/REALISTIC GOAL
A goal without a plan is just a wish. Sometimes we lost our interest in the study, job, or whatever we are doing because we are not getting desired results. And it’s not that we lack the effort, but our goals are not structured efficiently. If you need to succeed, you need to set realistic and challenging goals and make sure you’re meeting and getting the full benefit of them!
Sometimes to restore your study mode you have to set some short-term goals and do whatever it takes to meet them. But first, in order to visualize your goals, you should write it down. Make sure that the intent is clear and not complicated.
After setting clear goals, another best way to stay motivated is to set a schedule. By setting aside a certain amount of time, you will not only ensure that you have enough time to complete your assignments and study for your exams, but you’ll also begin to make studying a normal part of your daily routine.
2) SELECT/MAKE PERFECT STUDY PLACE
You should have designed workspace with limited distractions only if you can easily afford it. The best thing to do is to have your workspace outside of your bedroom. But if you are living at home with a lot of other people that of course may be a bit difficult. One thing you can do in this situation is that at least try to find a study space where you can feel productive and focused without getting distracted and try to have separate places for study and relaxation. You should keep the essentials on your desk.
3) CHANGE/VARY STUDY METHOD
Sometimes you just get tired of your studying and started to waste your time in unimportant activities which may result in a bad marks sheet. When you face this situation, You should take a break and when you will resume studying, you will interact with the material differently. For example, you can listen to audio lectures or watch video presentations. You can call one of your classmates and you can talk about the topic you are working on. This method will be helpful to do at least one group study session per month. You should try different methods to regain attention and your focus on study.
4) BREAK THE MATERIAL DOWN INTO CHUNKS
A major cause of distraction from studies is that the task ahead seems overwhelming. In order to come out of such a situation, you can chunk down the material. Assign yourself a certain number of those chunks each day and give your best to accomplish your daily task. Suddenly, you’re no longer faced with a scary task, but rather a series of manageable chunks.
5) RELAXATION OF MIND
Another thing you can do is to reward yourself with a short period of relaxation, whenever you complete chunks, which you have assigned to yourself. Take a short and enjoyable break e.g. spend a few minutes on your favorite smartphone game, a short walk, or whatever you are interested in.
6) MAKE A BORING SUBJECT ” INTERESTING”
Sometimes you find a subject difficult and boring but you have to study it again because of your work demands. We often miss the beauty of a subject because of our wrong way of looking. It’s true that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Then why not change our perspective and give it one more shot. Experiment with different learning strategies and find the one which suits you the best.
7) EXERCISE OF BRAIN
Continually exercise your brain, even when you’re not studying could be useful for your motivation. You can do this by reading, critical thinking, doing puzzles, and things of your interest.
Another key part of training your brain is rest and recovery. So make sure that you get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. Nutrition is another important aspect of training your brain.
Motivation is an essential thing if you are going to accomplish your study goals and to be focused during the study is also only possible through motivation.
The things that will keep you motivated are knowing how much time you have left, planning your week around study goals, varying the way you study, taking breaks, and sharing resources with other students.
Most of the problems people will be solved if they could give a little more attention to their personality traits. Learning more about yourself, what you can handle, your limits, weaknesses, and strength might just be what you need to snap-back. Then you will find an internal motivation to face anything that comes your way.
